Providing support & intervention services while addressing the needs of the employee & employer in order to maintain a successful working relationship.

Cumberland County Department of Services is committed to providing effective and influential means for recipients moving from welfare to work.  Work First Employment Services has proven that we are dedicated to finding employment for our participants for self-sufficiency. 

There is an exciting change in Cumberland County and North Carolina that focuses on job retention for our participants after obtaining employment.  Cumberland County DSS has an obligation to ensure job retention and to show clients that we will support them on their journey to being successful.  Recipients should have the comfort of knowing that there are retention resources with DSS that ensure intensified short term assistance, leading to long  term independence.

Support will be provided such as transportation, daycare, crisis intervention, and counseling in order to ensure job stability.  Mental Health (EEAP) will be utilized for possible substance abuse or  various personal issues that make it difficult to keep a job.  Contact will be made with the individual within days of starting a job in order to identify any initial problems or provide support and encouragement.

Retention Services will make  contacts by phone and  worksite to maintain effective communication and address  the needs of the employer.  Assistance will be made with WOTC identification.  Individuals will be screened for  appropriate employment placement.  This process will include detailed explanation of job expectations and
promoting retention.
